Surprisingly, a minor stint on Canadian Idol did nothing to boost Paul Filek’s music career.
“Canadian Idol is negative in most people’s eyes, it doesn’t help you much,” laments the singer/songwriter, adding he’s fortunate in the way he made it far enough in the show to talk about the experience, but not far enough to be remembered as a stand-out contestant. Unfortunately he made it to top 40, but left the show shortly thereafter.
The Kamloops-born musician, now living in Chilliwack, has had to make a name for himself on his own–and it’s not difficult with his unique sound.
“It’s not hard enough to be rock ‘n’ roll and not honky tonk enough to be country,” he says, adding he would almost classify it as pop-country. “I just write and play because I love it, I don’t put myself in any genre.”
But a lot of the time it’s the venues he plays that put him in one specific box. Whne he performs at The Roxy in Vancouver, it’s on country night. “If that’s what people think it is, that’s great.”
Filek plays acoustic bass and has been compared to James Blunt thanks to his love songs.
His new album, Elephant Shoes, is reflective of that. For those who don’t know, if you mouth the words “elephant shoes” it looks like you’re saying “I love you.”
“I was on the road, doing music full time for a year-and-a-half, and after a while of being on the road, I was feeling very thankful and appreciative to those who have supported me,” he says, explaining where the title track came from. And to show his thanks, he gave that song away for free to those who wanted it.
The rest of the album features 11 high-energy and thoughtful songs featuring his strong vocals and songwriting abilities. Elephant Shoes comes on the tail of two other releases: Good to Meet You from 2008 and Honest Songs From a Dishonest Heart in 2007.
Paul Filek performs live at Doc Willoughby’s Oct. 5 as part of their Alexander Keith’s birthday party; then Oct. 22 and Dec. 10 at Cabana Grille.
