Down in the mission, there’s a hidden gem of culinary delight at Seven Six Four on Lakeshore Road.

I dined there with one of my fellow foodie friends toward the end of their work day. Seven Six Four is open for only breakfast and lunch while doing private functions for dinner. If the food I tasted for lunch recently is any indication, I would definitely be interested in planning a private party with Chef Mark Filatow.

Their lunch menu offers four breakfast items if you decide to join them for a late brunch. Blueberry buttermilk pancakes, breakfast banana split with yogurt, granola and seasonal fruit, Swiss breakfast Rosti (shredded hash-brown cake with, Gruyere cheese and bacon, topped with poached eggs) and house-made granola.

We decided to share a house-made classic Caesar salad for $8. It was a generous portion and fit for two to share. The handmade dressing is tangy and light. The garlic isn’t overpowering and there definitely needed to be more of the tasty croutons and parmesan cheese. We didn’t have any salt or pepper on the table and I always appreciate a dab of freshly ground pepper on my Caesar salad.

I ordered the basil and spice crusted Ahi tuna over new potatoes, green beans, roasted red peppers and diced green olives with a lemon artichoke vinaigrette. Sounds delicious and it was. I love artichokes, green beans are one of my favourite vegetables and Ahi tuna is a new love of mine. Unfortunately, upon first bite my tastebuds weren’t prepared for the chilled dish, for I had unknowingly ordered a cold potato salad. Nevertheless it was delicious.

My dining companion ordered a house-made falafel-stuffed pita with marinated red peppers and goat cheese. For what seemed like an expensive addition, she added a chicken breast for $6. We shared her homestyle fries that came with her sandwich.

The television over the bar played black and white cartoons and I noted a fully stocked bar. They have reasonably priced coffee, lattes and espresso.

We did finish our waters quickly and my companion was out of iced tea for half our meal. When dining out, it’s important to have three things. Never an empty glass, always a full plate and one should have a good time. I always appreciate when the server anticipates my needs, offers more water when I’m looking at a half-full glass, brings more napkins when I’m eating something messy or in this instance, brings by more ketchup when we run out. We didn’t need more napkins but we were both in dire need of more ketchup, water and iced tea.

The food was amazing and for the five star quality of the cuisine, the menu is reasonably priced. I have to admit the service left a little to be desired. I’m sure since it is a newer establishment and the front of the house staff were on the young side all things can be reconsidered and given a second chance. I would go back to test the waters and at least enjoy some delicious food.

They offer many local wines and advertise their use of local growers and ingredients. If you don’t mind the commute out to the mission, try the charm and palatable creations of an amazing chef.
