German dancer and choreographer Heike Hennig is visiting the Okanagan and will present three public events this month, including a free film screening on Monday, Sept. 14, a dance workshop on Sunday, Sept. 20, and a free public lecture on Monday, Sept. 21.
Hennig’s award-winning pieces have been shown across Germany and Europe. Dancing With Time — the documentary film by director Trevor Peters about Hennig’s work with dancers of four generations — was shown at the Vancouver Film Festival in 2008.
“Hennig’s work focuses, among other things, on inter-generational dance, and working with dance and seniors,” says Claude Desmarais, Reichwald Professor in Germanic Studies, Department of Critical Studies. “We wanted to bring Hennig here as a way to show that Germanic Studies at UBC Okanagan is not just language, but encompasses the whole of Germanic culture.”
The visit is sponsored by the Reichwald Professorship and the Department of Creative Studies, both of which are housed in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at UBC Okanagan. Hennig’s appearance at UBC Okanagan is also made possible by the Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies at UBC Vancouver, and its Ziegler Visiting Speaker Series.
Space is limited to 50 people for each session of the public dance workshop on Sept. 20, so people should register early for the Sunday event, Desmarais advises.
To register for the Sunday, Sept. 20, dance workshop or for further information on any of the events, email reichwald.german@ubc.ca.
