Warriors press release/edited
The Westside Warriors begin a five game B.C. Hockey League exhibition schedule Tuesday night with a game against the defending RBC Royal Bank Cup champions the Vernon Vipers.
The Warriors and Vipers meet in Vernon (7 p.m. Wesbild Centre) Tuesday night as the Warriors play five games in six nights before the BCHL season opens on Sept. 11. The two teams meet again Wednesday in West Kelowna.
The Warriors have 35 players still with the team after holding a four day training camp at Royal LePage Place.
“Training camp went well,” said Warriors coach Darren Yopyk. “We have a lot of exhibition games coming up and I want to see some of the players in game situations before getting down to more manageable numbers.”
Yopyk expects to be close to 23 players by the time the exhibition season wraps up on Sunday.
The Warriors first ever training camp with Yopyk at the helm unearthed a lot of skilled players.
“I think our skill level has improved a lot,” he said. “I like what we have have. We have a bunch of young guys that are going to be really good in this league.”
The Warriors have three home exhibition games: Wednesday against Vernon, Saturday against Penticton and Sunday at home to Merritt.
Westside plays in Vernon Tuesday and in Penticton on Friday.
The club opens the BCHL season on the road Sept. 11, 12, 13 with a northern road swing to Prince George, Quesnel and Williams Lake. It’s home opener is Sept. 18 against Penticton.
