Kelowna Fire Museum press release/edited
Volunteers with the Kelowna Fire Museum and Education Centre are taking their community fund-raising initiative on the road.
While preparations for the new facility continue in the building next to the historic Water Street fire station, director of volunteers and donor relations Kelly Paley says, “Over the next few weeks, we’ll be out in the community seeking donations.
“On Aug. 29, people attending the Kelowna Farmer’s Market will see our volunteers selling Fire Museum t-shirts and providing information about and taking donations for our ‘Buy a Rung’ fundraising campaign. We’ll also be showing off one of our more mysterious pieces of fire apparatus, a Bickle Chemical Wagon.
“We’re not sure how it came into the Kelowna fire department, but we understand in the early part of the 1900’s, the Canadian government purchased these units for fire fighting at military bases, so perhaps there’s a connection with the Vernon Cadet camp?”
On Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the Bickle will be on display at Orchard Park Shopping Centre and Fire Museum volunteers will again provide information about the museum and be selling ladder rungs.
Donors to the ‘Buy a Rung’ campaign can purchase an inscribed ‘rung’ on one of ten ladders that will be created on highly-visible columns spaced throughout the museum main exhibit hall. For each $100 donation, you will receive up to three lines of inscribed text with 20 characters per line. There are a maximum of 200 rungs available for inscription during this fundraiser, which closes Oct. 31 this year.
In addition to donating at the upcoming community events, people can make their rung donation online by visiting the firemuseum.ca website and pay for it using the secure PayPal system. They may also choose to download and fill out a ‘Buy a Rung’ pamphlet form and return it by mail with their payment to the Kelowna Fire Museum and Education Centre, 1630 Water Street, Kelowna, V1Y 1J9.
While rung inscriptions will be installed during the fall anyone ordering rungs will be able to view their virtual rung within ten days of purchase on the fire museum website. All funds-raised through this and other donation campaigns are tax deductible and will go toward construction and operation of fire museum and education centre. For detailed information on various donation programs please visit www.firemuseum.ca or email donate@firemuseum.ca.
