If you haven’t heard of Doc Willoughby’s I have to ask, where have you been?

It’s located right on Bernard Avenue and is usually bustling with activity whether its on a sunny afternoon on their busy patio, or inside during the evening.

Doc Willoughby’s has a great menu with the usual appies and entrees you would see in a pub.

But they also have some items you might not see in other pubs like their baby stuffed yorkshire puddings and herb chicken sandwich. Their fries are unique in that they’re beer battered. Not something I particularly enjoy, but I can understand the appeal to others.

It’s a relatively large space. There’s lots of room to sit, whether it be inside or outside. And a number of TVs to watch sports.

The place always seems to be packed, whether it’s the after work crowd, or people milling around the area on a hot afternoon. So if you’re planning to meet friends you might want to have someone go early to grab a table.

Would you believe that there’s actually a Doc Willoughby? Some of his old medical stuff is housed in a glass display case right in the pub.

Here’s the story, according to the pub’s website:

In 1920, Dr. Willoughby established his medical practice in the Central Interior and was an early member of the Burris Clinic and Royal Inland Hospital.   Between 1963 and 1965 Dr. Willoughby served as a Member of Parliament for the Kamloops constituency.  Upon retirement, he and his wife, Marjorie enjoyed world travels and long hot summers at “Chasmar,” their cottage at Shuswap Lake, BC.  Dr. Willoughby’s most important love was for his family.  He lived 101 years, had four children, twenty one grand children, and over thirty great grand-children!  In the community he was known for his kind heart and devoted service as a physician.  David Willoughby, his youngest grandson, is proud to further the memory and values of his grandfather in Kelowna’s popular public house, Doc Willoughby’s Downtown Pub.

Doc Willoughby’s is a good stop any time. Find it at 353 Bernard Ave. It’s also home to live entertainment quite often. For more information visit their website.
