At 6:54 p.m. Tuesday, Kelowna Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 2300 Block of Ethel Street.
On arrival crews found heavy black smoke coming from the roof line of the residential home. The fire appears to have started in the rear bedroom closet area of the home and spread up into the attic.
A quick response and interior attack by crews contained the fire to the bedroom area of the home. The fire was first noticed by the tenant in the basement suite who smelled smoke and alerted the home owner who was working in the yard.
The smoke alarms did not activate in the home however all occupants did escape without injury. Damage is estimated at $30,000. Fire Investigators will be on scene in the morning to determine the cause.
The Kelowna Fire Department would like to remind residents to test their smoke alarms once a month, vacuum your smoke alarms twice a year to remove any dust or dirt from the sensing chamber and for battery operated smoke alarms, change the battery at least once a year.
Remember, never “borrow” the smoke alarm’s battery for another use. Smoke alarms do not last forever. Alarms older then 10 years and those near the end of their service life should be replaced.
