The funny thing about being a “local” is a lot of the time you don’t know what’s local.
You’re so set in your good old Kelowna lifestyle that you don’t think to try something new or keep an ear out for new, cool places to go.
So when I started at Kelowna.com I knew I had a lot of work ahead of me when I was assigned Nine Weeks of Summer.
This is a new feature which brings to you some hidden or not-so-secret gems in the community.
I got the best topics to delve into — pubs, live music venues and ice cream parlours.
So I’ve been making the rounds, stopping by these places meeting the owners and employees and writing up my opinions on what I see and hear.
It’s a lot of work, but I’m actually having a good time getting out there and doing things I wouldn’t normally do.
Sitting by myself eating a banana split on a sunny afternoon isn’t something I’ve done before; neither is hanging out at a table with a bunch of older gentlemen listening to live blues — I’ve been having great experiences so far.
And don’t think that because there are just nine examples in each category means that these are the end all and be all of what there is to do here, they’re just the tip of the iceberg.
It’s really amazing what is right under your nose waiting to be found. Even if there’s a little hole-in-the-wall you see all the time but have never visited, I think it’s time you do.
So get out there and check out these places and discover some other places that are new to you, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon or evening.
