Tourism across Canada has been hit by the recession, but no where near as badly as after 9/11 and the SARS outbreak.

In the last decade, tourism has had some tough times, according to Statistics Canada reports. But the tourist industry has been relatively worse off than now.

The current recession has caused tourist spending to drop by 2.4 per cent this year. After 9/11 in 2001, however, tourists spent 5.3 per cent less and after the SARS outbreak in Toronto in 2003, tourist bucks went down by 5.8 per cent.

For those travelling within Canada, spending has gone down over the past nine months, but only .1 per cent over the past three months.

In contrast, travel spending by foreign visitors fell 5.7 per cent in the same three months.
