A fire investigator combs through the wreckage left after a fire early this morning gutted three businesses in a commercial building on Asher Road in Rutland. The RCMP's Serious Crimes Unit is now investigating that blaze and two others in the area, which destroyed a shed and a soft-sided carport. Business owners in the area believe the commercial building fire likely originated in an East Indian grocery store. Stay tuned for updates.
Kelowna fire crews had a busy night with three fires but strangely—suspiciously—they didn’t have to travel too far to find all three.
Kelowna Fire Department Platoon Captain Harold Heyming says police were all over the scenes of three fires in Rutland. The first call came around 1:30 a.m. when a detached garage at a vacant home on Asher Road burned down.
“While we were at that fire, there was a report from nearby residents that something else was on fire down the alley. We freed up one crew and they found a fence on fire on Froelich Road 300 yards down the alley,” he says. “You will see a theme developing here.”
As they finished with that fire, another call came in at 2:50 a.m., again on Asher Road. There they found the biggest fire yet at a commercial building. They found flames coming from the back of it and through the roof. The fires are clearly suspicious. He said several teams of RCMP were on scene, including dog teams.
Damage is estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
